Emergency Charging Generator for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
5.1 Core Principle for Power Selection
Single UAV Charging: The rated power of the generator should be 1.2–1.5 times the rated power of the UAV charger. For example, to supply power to the 9,000 W charger of the DJI T50, a generator with a rated power of 10.8–13.5 kW should be selected. To power the 1,070 W charger of the DJI Matrice 350 RTK, a generator with a rated power of 1.3–1.6 kW is sufficient.
Multiple UAVs Charging Simultaneously: The total generator power should be calculated as the sum of all charger powers × 1.2 (redundancy factor) to prevent generator overload.
5.2 Output Performance Requirements
Voltage and Frequency: The generator must provide stable output of 220 V (single-phase) or 380 V (three-phase, for high-power models) with a frequency of 50 Hz. The voltage fluctuation range should be ≤ ±3% to prevent damage to chargers or UAV batteries.
Waveform Type: Generators with pure sine wave output are preferred. Industrial UAV chargers generally use switching power supplies, which are sensitive to waveform quality. Modified sine wave or square wave outputs may cause the charger to fail to start, result in incomplete battery charging, or even cause equipment malfunction.
5.3 Compatibility and Protection Functions
Starting Method: The generator should support electric start (convenient) and recoil/manual start (backup) to provide greater flexibility in outdoor operations.
Protection Mechanisms: The generator should include overload protection, short-circuit protection, and over-voltage/under-voltage protection to prevent damage to the generator or UAV equipment under abnormal operating conditions.
5.4 Additional Requirements for Industrial Applications
Portability: For outdoor agricultural spraying and inspection tasks, small gasoline or diesel generators (lightweight and compact) are preferred, or models equipped with wheels and portable handles. For fixed operation stations, larger silent diesel generators may be selected.
Fuel Economy: The generator’s endurance should meet the requirements of a full day of operation. For example, when supporting DJI T50 UAV operations, the generator should be capable of continuous operation for 8–10 hours, reducing the frequency of refueling.
